NRC License Drafting and Amendment
The use of radioactive materials is within the jurisdiction of the United
States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Anyone who wishes to possess
and handle radioactive materials must obtain NRC Materials License.
The license procurement process typically begins with drafting and submission to
the NRC of an extensive application containing detailed information about the
applicant, applicant’s facilities, personnel, and the extent of intended use.
After the application is filed, the NRC may require explanations and submission of
additional information. The communications between the NRC and the applicant
continues until the NRC is satisfied that the substance of the application and the
underlying facts comply with the regulatory requirements.
On behalf of our clients, we had drafted and submitted a substantial number of
applications for the NRC Materials License. We worked directly with the NRC during
the licensing process. In every case, we successfully gained approval of the
application and issuance of the License.
The original conditions of the License often change after initial grant.
In such circumstances, the License must be amended. Examples of changes that
may require license amendment include location, laboratory space arrangement,
designation of new Radiation Safety Officer, changes in the nature and/or maximum
amount of radioactive materials, and changes in handling procedures.
We helped our clients in the amendment process
to maintain compliance and to insure uninterrupted
use of radioactive materials.
NRC License Administration
The
NRC Materials License describes a number of
conditions pertaining to handling of radioactive
materials and facility operations. Thus, the
License requires establishment of a radiation
safety program to assure safe handling of
radioactive materials. After the License is
granted, we help our clients to manage the
radiation safety programs and to comply with
the conditions of the License.
